Abia state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has stressed the need to cut down on the high cost of governance even as he announced a slash in his personal emolument and travelling allowances by 50% until the salaries and allowances owed workers in the state are cleared. Ikpeazu said that he is pained by his administration’s inability to pay salaries of workers as and when due, stressing that he finds it difficult to receive his salary when workers of the state are owed arrears of salary and called on government appointees to follow his example.

Dr Ikpeazu made the declaration yesterday in Umuahia while swearing in a new Head of Service (HOS) Dr. Vivian Uma, noting that the plight of workers in the state was of serious concern to his administration. Ikpeazu said that he is pained by the development and promised to do everything to ensure that salaries and allowances of workers in the state are systematically cleared.

He said the appointment of a new HOS which he described as a milestone was borne out of his government’s desire to reinvigorate the civil service, saying that he expects the Abia civil service to be more proactive for the challenges ahead and urged him to ensure that the welfare of workers was paramount during his regime. He charged Uma to look for innovative ways of doing things especially in terms of shoring up the internally Generated Revenue [IGR] of the state. In his acceptance speech, the new head of service, Dr. Vivian Uma promised to bring positive transformation to the civil service, assuring that discipline and sound ethical conduct would be enthroned in the service for greater service delivery. Speaking further, he appreciated the Governor for appointing him and pledged to be supportive of his administration.
