Against Massive Rumours Of Death In Dss Detension, Former Chief Security Officer To Goodluck Jonathan Speaks To Confirm He Is Alive
Former Chief Security Officer to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Gordon Obua, who was reported, by online media, to have died in the Department of Security Service (DSS) custody says he is alive and healthy.
Addressing journalist yesterday at the SSS head quarter in Abuja, Obua said he was surprised to hear the rumour of his death in detention.
The former CSO said he has been in the SSS custody in the past six days, haven been arrested and incarcerated on July 16. “Let me use this opportunity to thank all Nigerians and members of my family who had expressed very serious concern for the past six days because of the prevailing situation between I and my office.
This morning my attention was drawn to the fact that I died in SSS custody. “This has caused serious anxiety. I wish to use this medium to assure Nigerians that I am healthy and alive”, he said.
Obua told journalists that he is still in service, sequel to speculations that he had been sacked. “SSS is a serious organization. I have limitation in which I am allowed to talk as a security officer.
I am still in the service. So far no adverse situation”, he said. When asked why he was detained, Obua said he could not address the press on his alleged offence. Rather, he said he has limitations on his words as security personnel.
Though he refused to state details, media reports had it that Obua was denied access to food and medication since the day he was brought in to SSS custody. It was also reported that he was briefly admitted into a hospital and later discharged over hypertension issues.
The Union however gathered that Obua has been held in solitary confinement and also denied access to his lawyers, family, and his doctors on the alleged orders of the new Director General of the DSS, Lawal Daura.
A DSS source which pleads anonymity however said “we don’t do that in SSS; all those stories you hear on media’s are fabricated stories, nothing happened to him”. Recall that a non-governmental organisation, the Society for Global Justice had last weekend issued a statement on Obua’s continued detention at the DSS while calling for the release of the former Chief Security Officer.
Executive director of the group, Mr. Marcus Ogabe confirmed that Obua was detained at the SSS headquarters in Abuja since Thursday. The group also said the continued detention of Obua is indicative of “the tyrannical, autocratic and dictatorship tendency of the Muhammadu Buhari administration”.
“Obua has been detained since last Thursday at the headquarters of the State Security Services in Abuja without charge. He was also not told the reason for which he is being detained”, the group alleged.
