Gunmen Kidnap Saipem Worker

Anthony Abomah a staff of Saipem Nig Ltd, an oil serving company located at Owaza Community in Ukwa West Local Government area of Abia State has been abducted by unknown gunmen. The Public Relations Officer of Saipem, Fubara Sam Banigo who confirmed the incident to newsmen disclosed that the gunmen are said to be demanding a ransom of N2million from his family, before his release.

According to Banigo, Abomah was kidnapped by abductors while leaving his residential quarters to his Office. We also learnt that the kidnappers had already made calls to the family of their captive demanding the sum of N2million. Banigo expressed shock said that kidnap incident was the first to happen to any staff of the Company since the company’s operation in Owaza.

He expressed fear with the renewed kidnapping activities in the oil rich community and urged the State government and the Military Authority to reconsider its stand on the rumored plans to relocate the Military base at Ukwa West Council Area of the State. Reacting on the unfortunate incident, the Traditional Ruler of Igiri Ukwu autonomous Community in Owaza, Eze Jonathan Ezere commended the Abia State Government for tackling security challenges in the community.

Ezere recalled the exploits of the security agencies when the Community was invaded by kidnappers, noting that the community has remained peaceful since the State government launched an offensive against crime in the State. The Monarch regretted the renewed wave of crime in the area and urged the State government and military authorities to allow the military to be stationed in the area, stressing that Oil producing communities should have security to protect lives and property. All efforts to reach state Commissioner of Police, Joshak Habila or the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Ezekiel Onyeke, DSP, proved abortive as they could not be reached on their Cell Phones.
