Gowon Showers Praises On Late Chinyere Asika

The remains of late Mrs. Chinyere Asika, wife of the late former Administrator of the defunct East Central State were yesterday laid to rest at her husband’s ancestral home, Tasia Road, Umudei village, Onitsha.

In a speech at the burial service which, took place at the All Saints Cathedral, Diocese on the Niger, the former Head of State, Dr. Yakubu Gowon, went memory lane on the various roles played by the late Chinyere Asika and her husband, late Dr. Ukpabi Asika in achieving a lasting peace in the defunct Biafran soil.

According to Gowon most of the Igbo personalities in the defunct East Central State had de clined all overtures made to them to fill the vacuum in governance in the defunct state, but with the support of the late Chinyere Asika, the husband, Ukpabi who was then a lecturer at University of Ibadan accepted the onerous task of leading his people out of war.

Gowon who spoke like a repentant army General, however, admonished the political role played by the Asika’s in bringing an end to the brutal civil war. The remains of the late Asika was brought to her husband’s ancestral home located at Tasia Road, Inland Town, Onitsha at about 2.15 pm with the Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo presiding over by grave side Christian rites.
