Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba, Lagos has within 15 months, completed and handed over a 1, 200 bed space hostel for female students at the school.

The PTA partnership with the school authority is as a result of their resolve to successfully provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Handover ceremony of the hostel was witnessed by the Minister of State, Federal Minister of Education (FME), Prof. Anthony Anwukah among other officials of the ministry.

Others include National President of PTA Dr. Gabriel Osy Nnaji, Mrs. Anne Okonkwo and HRM, Eze Prof. Peter O. Ebigbo amongst others.

Speaking at the official unveiling of 1,200 bed hostel, PTA Chairperson FSTC, Yaba Mrs. Obiageli Rose Igwillo said, the association has been a pillar of support to the development of the college.

“During 2014/2015 academic session, when it was so evident that the boys’ hostel was in a very bad state, considering the level of dilapidation of the building, the PTA, as a matter of urgency, suspended other activities and renovated the building to standard. Same was done for the girls hostel during the same academic session”, she said.

Igwilo further added that the students were faced with growing hostel accommodation problem which informed the need for the female hostel.

The PTA Chairperson also pointed out that to enhance the standard of living, the PTA embarked on the major project in the institution as the importance of education in a child’s life cannot be overemphasized.

She pointed out that the performance of their students was encouraging as they have constantly proven that they can compete favorably with others from anywhere in the country.

“I have passion for the welfare of the children in the school and that is why I said, let me join the team to put on my best”, she declared.

Igwilo however lamented that Nigeria lacks maintenance culture, saying that “the challenge is mindset of some of the association members. We were propelled to embark on this laudable task in spite of all the challenges. We have seen that education in Nigeria can no longer be left in the hands of the Federal Government alone”.

Speaking also, PTA National President, Dr. Gabriel Osy Nnaji described the event as “amazing”, explaining that it was the first of its kind.

Nnaji said “this is amazing. It is the first ever project of this magnitude I have come to witness as the President of this association. It is one that should be emulated by all the chairmen and chairpersons in all of the 104 unity colleges”.

He commended the efforts of the chairperson and executive members who completed the project within the space of 15 months.

Zonal Coordinator, South West, Unity Colleges, Adebayo Laide, said he was overwhelmed by the wonderful edifice built by the PTA of FSTC, Yaba. He said “this is a challenge to all other chairmen and chairpersons of all other PTA in other schools”.

Retired Principal, Mrs. Magdalen Agbomma Nwankwo also expressed optimism on Nigeria’s educational standard, adding that the educational system in Nigeria has not fallen.

“I don’t believe it is falling but all depends on the angle that you are looking at; but the academic standard is not falling but they have even added value as they have IT sections in schools “.

Advising Federal Government to invest more on education, Nwankwor said “we have the 1,200 bed female hostel but we still need more facilities in school so that the students will get that quality education. Facilities should be adequate in schools”, Nwankwo concluded

PTA Public Relation Officer, Pastor Prosper Kanayo, in his own comment said “we must give glory to God because we have a good leader. Bible says if the foundation is faulty what would the righteous do?

Pastor queried that if the head of any organization is corrupt the rest will be corrupt just as he thanked God for their chairperson which he described as a woman that has a fear of God and a woman that believes that excellence and integrity matter in life.

“This particular project started by God and ended by God. I don’t think there is any unity college that has this kind of executive building; however, we are not taking the glory”, he said.
