FCT Vows To Close Illegal Schools

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has declared that it will soon embark on mass closure of unapproved and unaccredited schools in the territory, even as the administration has threatened to prosecute proprietors and promoters of such schools.

The Director, Department of Quality Assurance of the Education Secretariat of FCT Administration, Ayuba Didam, said this in Abuja, warning parents to always verify the accreditation status of private schools at the Head office of the Department of Quality Assurance located on Ashiek Jarma street in Jabi Abuja or any of the Department’s zonal offices in the six Area Councils of the FCT, stressing that the names of such approved schools can also be found on the web page of the Education Secretariat.

He said that his Department will soon commence another round of closure of private schools in addition to the over 400 such unapproved schools that were shut down last year.

The Director emphasized that parents also share in the responsibility of ensuring good quality education for their children. According to him, members of his staff in all the six Area Councils have carried out inspection of the schools in their domain and have compiled a report of substandard schools that will be shut down.

He therefore advised parents to ensure that the private schools their children are enrolled in are duly accredited by the DQE or face the consequences of closing down the school mid term.
