FCT: ‎Non Completion of VP Residence, Others Worries Reps

Dyepkazah Shibayan, Abuja
The House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday lamented that despite the huge allocations, projects within the nation’s capital are yet to be completed.
Chairman of the Committee, Herman Hembe at the 2016 Priority Budget defence of the FCT, said that priority should be given to the Abuja Rail project due to the collapse of roads by the use of heavy duty trucks.
While citing the different  projects visited by committee on oversight, such as the; Gurara Falls road, Lower Usman Dam, Vice President residence and others, Hembe expressed dissatisfaction at the level of completions of the various projects.
The Chairman said it was outrageous that at the Vice President residence a Mosque that will house 12 people is costing N96 million, the Chapel that will house 20 people will go for N86 million, the Gate House N55 million and the ADCs residence will cost N288 million.
He wondered why N2 billion will be used to erect structures for the Principal Officers of the National Assembly.
“The Vice President residence has been paid for 88 percent, we are not comfortable with the projects. How can you spend 96 million naira on a mosque that takes 12 people and your defending it.
“Why do you keep patronising people (Julius Berger) who keep embarrassing us, “Hembe said.
The Committee said N4 billion presented in the 2016 budget by President Buhari as counter part funding for the FCT rail project is too poor adding that the money should be reviewed upwards to N24 billion to enable completion by December, 2016.
Members of the committee queried why the FCT would have a debt profile of a N100billion insisting that rather than bulk budgeting details of requests should be made available to the committee.
The Minister of the FCT, Mohammad Bello while commenting on the projects said, “Should they continue as they are and should there be a review? We will leave it to the committee’s wisdom to guide the FCT.
“We will be guided by what you decide, “Bello added.
