CUDA Boss Frowns At Turning Of Street Into Mechanic Workshop

The Executive Secretary, Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Mr. Joe-Mary Ekeng Ita has lauded the proposal of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN) Cross River State Chapter for a three day clean up exercise and public sensitization on environmental sanitation in Cross River State.

Speaking, during a courtesy visit paid him by the Association in his office recently, Mr. Ita stressed the need of maintaining a clean and green environment in the state and noted that the Association’s initiative was very timely as a lot of visitors will come into the state this season for tourism, business and holidays, adding that there was need for adequate public enlightenment to keep the environment clean as well as maintain the status of Calabar as the cleanest city in the country.

Responding to issues raised by the Health Officers, the CUDA Boss frowned at the activities around Bedwell area, noting that the area has been turned to a mechanic village and that the Authority is bent on curbing the nuisance and is working with the Mechanic Association to address the menace. Also, Mr. Ekeng Ita encouraged the need for sanitation courts in strategic areas of the State to handle sanitation and environmental issues as well as prosecute defaulters.

He advised that the court when created should be straight forward and warned against corruption when handling environmental cases. He called for the streamlining of environmental duties as CUDA is not solely responsible for the environment. The CUDA Boss promised to assist the Association during her 3 day clean up exercise with trucks, other equipment and manpower in order to achieve the desired success.

The President of the Association, Sanitarian Sylvanus Peter Bassey informed that the essence of the visit was to partner CUDA in line with the Association’s vision of promoting Public Health, sensitizing the public and sustaining the sanitation and cleanliness of the Calabar city. He stated that the Association intend to carry out a 3 day clean up exercise slated for December 1 – 3rd, 2015, adding that the exercise will feature sanitation rally tagged: “Operation Keep Calabar Clean’’, covering the following areas; Calabar road to White House street, Ndidem Usang Iso road by Effio Ette Round About to Parliamentary road, and Bedwell street and environs.
