Buhari, Service Chiefs Meet Ahead of Lake Chad Parley

As government intensifies efforts to rout insurgency from Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday met with the Service Chiefs for the second time since he assumed office. The President during the meeting received briefings from the Service Chiefs on issues bothering on security as well as on Lake Chad Basin Commission’s meeting billed for today (Thursday) in Abuja.

The meeting which held behind closed doors at the Defence House, Abuja, was part of efforts to marshal out plans that will be presented at a meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Commission., holding today in Abuja. Those who attended the meeting yesterday were the National Security Adviser, Col.

Sambo Dasuki (retd.); Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Ismail Aliyu. Aliyu who briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that lasted about two hours, said the meeting is focusing on how to beef up the war against Boko Haram.

He said “the arrangement of the meeting held between the chief of Defence staff of the Lake Chad Basin and ministers of defence which is culminating in the president’s meeting tomorrow (Thursday). “We have discussed the issue of the operationalisation of the Multi National Joint Task Force and the citing of its headquarters in N’Djamena and the contribution from various states” “This is with the objective of fighting the insurgency within that region.

Some issues came out that the president identified, he wants us to see the end of this fight for the purpose of peace, security and prosperity of the region.” The Boko Haram sect, he said has intensified their terror attacks on innocent people in the northeastern, since the President took over, but assured that everything is being done to rout the insurgents out of Nigeria Buhari had vowed to defeat the terrorists and had ordered the military command to move to Maiduguri until the sect is destroyed.
