South Africa’s environment ministry, has reported that 1,215 rhinos were poached last year. This disclosure was made on Wednesday after aerial surveillance and other “concerted efforts” detected carcasses of rhinos killed by poachers.
As habitat to most of the world’s rhinos, South Africa has struggled to contain poaching syndicates because of rising demand for their horns in parts of Asia, including Vietnam.
Founder of a group called Outraged SA Citizens Against Poaching, Mr. Allison Thomson, said there are cases not included in the official statistics. He also enlightens that lions or other predators probably kill some vulnerable rhino calves whose mothers are poached.
