BREAKING: Al-Shaabab’s Gunmen Attacks Two Mogadishu Hotels

The Voice of America (VOA) has reported that Al-Shabab gunmen attacked two hotels in Somalia’s capital today’s evening, killing at least three people.

Police say fighting is still going on inside the hotels and say the death toll is likely to rise.

Initial accounts say car bombs exploded at the gates of the Weheliye and Siyad hotels and that the gunmen then stormed the buildings.

Ambulances were seen collecting wounded people from outside the hotels.

The Siyad hotel is close to the presidential palace and the fortified government district.

Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack. The group has been trying for years to overthrow the Somali government and establish a strict Islamic state.

Somali soldiers and troops from the African Union’s peacekeeping force have had success in pushing al-Shabab from Somalia’s major cities, but the group still controls other areas and continues to launch attacks.
