ASUU Lambast Oshiomole Over Demolition of UNIBEN Staff Quarters

Raymond Ozoji , Awka

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) has lambasted Edo State Governor comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole over what it described as acts of lawlessness, impunity and irresponsibility being exhibited by the governor .

ASUU alleged that Oshiomole used bulldosers to pull down lecturers’ staff buildings at the university of Benin Edo State . The union further disclosed that the victims of the gruesome demolition exercise were at the workplace when governor Adams Oshiomole in the company of thugs , swooped on the buildings and razed them down only for the lecturers to return after work to meet their houses in ruins .

Briefing newsmen at the Post-Graduate School conference hall  Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka , zonal coordinator of the Owerri zone arm of ASUU Prof.Ike Odimegwu wondered why a labour leader like the Edo state governor should oppress workers under his watch . The zonal coordinator who said that the national body of ASUU had given each zone directive to address the media on the mayhem unleashed on UNIBEN staff by Oshiomole , stated that it was time the governor was called to order .

According to him ,  ‘ the nation should not wait until an ASUU member dies before Adams Oshiomole should be called to order ‘ stressing that it is the height of lawlessness and irresponsibility for one who swore to uphold respect for the rule of law and provisions of the constitution to be involved in such sinister act .

Although Prof.Odimegwu noted that the governor had promised to compensate those who suffered losses in the demolition but to the union’s greatest consternation the governor further directed complete destruction of the remaining structures belonging to the University of Benin recently while the court of appeal was yet to decide on the case pointing out that governor Adams Oshiomole has no respect for the law .

To this end therefore , the Owerri zonal arm of ASUU demanded that governor Adams Oshiomole should show respect for the laws of the land as well as allow the court process to run its natural course while living up to his promise to compensate members of staff of the University of Benin who were affected by the demolition
