Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Northern Leaders Forum has resolved to screen all northern candidates aspiring for various national offices of party, with a view to field only the best for the August 17, 2016 convention scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt.
The NLF, which constituted a 16-man committee to carry out the task of pruning the lot for the finest, also resolved that it would throw its weight behind candidates for positions zoned outside the North where such candidates would advance the interests of Northern Nigeria.
This was part of the resolution at the 5th Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Northern Leaders Forum in Abuja.
The committee which is led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu was mandated to present its report to the NLF On Tuesday, being eve of the convention, to enable elders give direction to the northern delegates to the convention the respective candidates of their choice.
Coordinator of the NLF, Professor Jerry Gana, said their position was not to impose any person for the respective offices being vied for, but as “a strategic guideline” for the Northern candidates to back only good candidates.
Addressing the forum, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alhaji Haliru Bello, said the North drives the political direction of the country and commended the leadership of the forum for its effort at convening such a gathering and reaching its consensus.
He said the People Democratic Party has provided leadership and stability in politics and governance of the country.
Haliru said the recent comment by Adamu Ciroma on the state of the polity that PDP did not lose the election and APC did not win the election resonates stronger in the face of recent developments.
He explained that it was PDP votes that propelled Muhammadu Buhari to victory, stressing that the APC knows that it was the structures of the five governors that left the PDP took along with them that actually swelled the votes for the APC.
Haliru said come 2019, the regrouping of the PDP will allow her takeover power as it has learnt its lessons over its mistakes that gave the APC victory.
“The leadership made a mistake and the followership voted the APC into power in protest. Now that we are willing to work together, we can take over Power come 2019,” he said.
