In its resolve to making sure that crime and criminality is reduced to the barest minimum in the metropolis, the Lagos State Police Command has set up a crack squad unit.
This development according to Police source, should not be seen as a duplication of duties, but to compliment other crime combating units like the dreaded SARS and other intelligent and investigative units in the command.
The squad our sources further said, will mainly handle what he described as high profile cases, stressing that the mandate is to investigate and prosecute any offender no matter the social strata they might belong in.
The squad is to be led by Joel Ugowe a Superintendent of Police (SP) who over the years have been involved in investigation duties of some high profile cases and has proven to be a competent hand.
In a telephone interview with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Ikeja Command CP Kayode Aderanti, he noted that the squad made up of men and officers drawn from various units of the command, has been mandated to fulfill its 3 point agenda of fighting and combating crimes- ,arrest and prosecuting any person found wanting
While commending the efforts of SP Abba Kyari Officer-in charge SARS Ikeja,he said a lot still need to be done in ensuring that Lagos State is free of crimes and a safe place to do business.
CP Aderanti allayed the fear been expressed in some quarters that with the advent of the newly created Crack Squad it could possibly interfere with the duties of other units but stressed that the new unit would rather be complimenting other units towards achieving a crime free society.
