The Police in Lagos have stepped up effort towards unveiling circumstances surrounding the death of a man in the Christ Apostolic Church in Peace Estate Baruwa Ipaja area of Lagos State.
Sources said the deceased a father of four identified as Waheed Majekodumi was chased into the church by unknown men before his death.
It was gathered that the victim until his death lives in the Abule area of Ipaja and was a staff of a building block making industry.
Already two suspects have been arrested in connection with the matter by the Ipaja police division.
The resident pastor of the church who gave his name as Popoola Oluwasumidotun and a member of the church identified as Folashade Ebun, who were both present at the scene of the incident have been arrested and they are helping the police in their investigations.
Both suspects we gathered have denied knowledge of what led to the man’s death.
Sources said the case was first reported at the Ipaja police division, and was transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), where Popoola and Folashade are being interrogated.
Oluwasumidotun who is the resident pastor of the church stated in his statement to the police that he was attracted to the scene of the incident following the alarm raised by a church member “I ran to the church auditorium where I met our member Ebun standing next to a man on the ground. I asked her what happened and who the man was.
“She said the man ran into the church shouting for help and the next thing he fell on the floor and was gasping for breath.
“At that point I became confused and I rushed out to contact residents of the area whether they know him and fortunately I saw the husband to one of my church members who was able to identify him.
“He said the man lives in Abule, a street not far from the church and we moved to the area where they told us that he was a drunk who lives in that neighbourhood.
“Some of the people around came to the scene of the incident and they tried to wake him but he was confirmed dead. I then called on the owner of the church and his son who is also a pastor where I was advised to report the matter to the police.
The statement of the second suspect Folashade Ebun was not different from that of Popoola.
Ebun, mother of three, who claimed has been living in the church compound since she parted ways with the husband narrated that she was sweeping the church auditorium when she heard a man screaming for help and he ran into the church but she found nobody pursuing him.
“I thought someone was chasing him but I discovered he was alone. He fell on the ground and I quickly called out for the pastor, who also came in almost immediately. This is a very strange incident the man ran into this church to put us into problem but I know our God will vindicate us because we have nothing to do with his death.
Mother of his four children, who gave her name as Moshundat was not in surprise over the incident, she said the husband lived a reckless life. According to her,the husband took to drinking and was always living a wayward life who prefer staying outside home for months without caring for the wellbeing of his children and wife. For me, I don’t suspect anyone as being responsible for his death.”
Others who spoke to The Union were of the opinion that the deceased may have been attacked by some hoodlums and he managed to run into the church premises for help.
Meanwhile, the police at the Homicide department of the SCID are working tirelessly to come a conclusion what actually killed him.
Police sources said corpse of the decease has since been deposited at the public mortuary for autopsy.
