Internet Association Tasks Nigerians On Good Domain Names

Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) on Sunday urged Nigerians to choose good domain names, so as to boost their online presence.
The President of NIRA, Mr Sunday Folayan, gave the advice in a statement in Lagos.
The statement said that it was essential to choose a unique name, it must be short and simple and not include numbers and dashes.
It said that a good domain name must be easy to spell and memorise, and an internet user should avoid using any copyright or trade-marked names.
“Use keywords that are relevant to your topic, consider your target audience before choosing a name, name your website after your business, always try to register ‘YourName’, if it is available, for blogs.
“Your choice of a domain name can affect the potential success of your online presence.
“It is important to note that millions of domain names are already registered, most especially on all the Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) such as ‘.com, .org, .net, e.tc’.
“To get good domain names on these TLDs, you must be a bit creative with your name or buy it at a very high cost.
“The good thing about those domain names you love to register and that had been taken on the gTLDs is that most of them are still available on other TLDs like ‘.ng’ and will function very well, irrespective of the TLD you choose to register on,” the statement said.
It said that the .ng domain extension would allow the user target his customers effectively, set himself apart with his brand name and brand product.
The statement, therefore, urged Nigerians to be wise in the choice of domain names for their websites.
”Domain names and web hosting are completely different things, though these services could be obtained from the same service provider.
”Over the past eight years, NIRA, the Registry of the .ng Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD), has been working with many different registrars that offer domain name registration and web hosting services.
”To register your domain names, choose from any of the accredited registrars list on the NIRA website, http://nira.org.ng/ng/,” it added. (NAN)
