Ebere Chibuzor writes that the people of Awgbu in Anambra state held their end of year party in a colorful style
Recently, the Awgbu Community Town Hall situated at Amuwo Odofin, Lagos played host to indigenes of the town and their well-wishers. The host of the august gathering- Awgbu Progressive Union (APU) had earlier made all arrangements possible so that the day would be a stress free one.
Expectedly, the expansive town hall was filled to the brim at midday, shortly before the occasion took off in grand style. The gathering was glamorous and one thing unique with virtually all the guests were the fact that they were all smiles, signifying joy and merriment in their hearts.
It took a while before the event started proper and when they finally started, there were brightness in the air as most of the Awgbu indigenes enjoyed themselves with uncontrollable ecstasy. The first group to storm the stage was the ‘Igba Eze Group’ cultural dance followed by other cultural performances. High point of the event was the decoration of some notable indigenes who were given awards for their positive impacts to Awgbu Community.
The awards were given in three different categories; while some were given in bronze, others were given in silver and gold. Although, the event did not start at the scheduled time but it was full of fun, joy and happiness as kinsmen greeted each others pleasantly.
The organisers devised a strategy; they did not follow the popular pattern of kicking-off in a hurry, rather they kept the guests in suspense as a group of drummers invaded the stage with some dignitaries as they filter in one by one The activities of the day were a beautiful blend.
From decorations of some members and presentations of awards, gift items for the widows among others. Speaking at the event, President of Awgbu Progressive Union Men’s Wing Chief Okey Okoyeogbu said APU had been witnessing peace over the years. He pointed out that most unions go into crisis few years after their formation. He also explained, the people were privileged to witnesses to the maturity of Awgbu Progressive Union, Lagos Branch.
He thanked Almighty God for the sustainability of APU. “For over 50 years the union has been in existence, we use this medium to appreciate Almighty God for the sustainability of APU Lagos, our founding fathers, Ex-Presidents, executives among others”. Speaking further, Okoyeogbu urged, soonest my administration would soon conclude the documentation of the Civic Center land.
“I took the mantle of the leadership on the 1st Sunday, August, 2013 while I and my executives promised to appreciate our members that have contributed in one way or the other”. Expressing optimism, he said “Under the program of events of 20013 of this administration, we have empowered about 22 windows in 2013. In 2014, we provided a bore hole at the civic centre.
In the same 2014, we empowered about 28 with cash. In the first week of October, 2014 we started the renovation and re-construction of Awgbu Health Centre that is over 50 year old. “It took this administration only 11 months to re-build and furnish the hospital that was handed over to the President General Awgbu on September, 2015 this year”.
Commenting further, he unfolded what they have in pipeline as he said they would embark on a 20,000,000.00 worth of project. “We want to rebuild our boys’ quarter and make it a storey building and others just as he appealed to friends, well wishers and members of APU for financial support.
He concluded by appreciating the dignitaries at the event which include Chief Louis Okeke, Chief Aloysius Okoye, the presidentAuto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association(ASPAMDA) Chief Daniel Oforkansi, CEO Chisco Motors Chief Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu (MFR), Chief Okey Ezibe and otherwise. There were mixed feelings among the widows that benefited that day. Some felt good but not really good while the event always remind them of their late partners’.
According one of the beneficiaries Mrs Ijeoma Oduogu felt disappointed and she said the day would always reminded him of what that has passed. “Every year I receive this with tears but I still appreciate the organizers”. Another beneficiary Mrs Angela Udoye said,”They have been giving us rice, sometime with cash virtually every year”. I am happy she said. Reacting, a widow Nneka Oduogu who appreciated APU, equally advised other widows in our society to embrace God.
Contributing, women leader of APU Lagos Wing, Mrs Ifenyinwa Nwankwo said that APU has no plan to stop extending alms to widows. Vibrant Awardees of the day include: the awards which were in three categories such as bronze, silver and the gold. Others are : Chief Jude Okoyeanulu, Mr Fred Nyibe, Mr Geofrey Okonkwo, Chief Ben Odeji, Chief Anayo Ifebunso, Pharm Uchenna Oknonkwo among received bronze on that day.
In addition, awardees on the silver category include:Hon. Okey Enekwe chairman Orumba North LGA, Chief Adolphus Ezeonye, Hon Romanus Obi, Chief Emma. However, ASPAMDA President Chief Daniel Oforkansi, Mr Ken Mbala and three others fell in gold category.
