Students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) offering Diploma courses in Public Administration, Personnel management, Local Government Administration have been at logger heads with the Director of the Institute over issues bothering on results. The students grouse according to our investigations revealed that some of the students who paid school fees before and after examinations that were not remitted early to the institute as a proof of payment hence the withholding of their results by the Director.
A 200 level Diploma student of Public Administration who pleaded for anonymity lamented that, “we paid school fees and their results were not computed even when they have shown receipt of payment” The students said they were unduly oppressed and intimidate by the Director of the Institute, Dr Felix Akpan.
“On account of not seeing our result the Director will force us to write re-sit examinations and we have complained to several quarters and all have not yielded any positive response” he told The UNION. “The 2011 set who had long graduated, their results have not been approved even those who had gotten admission suffered the same fate. There have been so much delay in the release of examination results and this is because of the insensitivity and lukewarm attitude of the Director towards the affairs of the institute” he said. Another 2000 level female Diploma Student of Personnel Management also alleged that Director fraudulently collected illegal fee of five hundred naira for departmental clearance.
She also alleged that the Director had deliberately refused to allow students of the institute to form an association which could act as platform to challenge certain illegalities. According to her, students are being oppressed by Dr. Akpan who have been rejecting and destroying exams scripts of students who paid fees but whose records were not delivered early to IPPA. “There has been non-release of results leading to denial of direct entry admission and no transcript from the registry because our results are not there and the Director has been boasting of having Vice-chancellor as godfather and therefore above the law.
This is leadership recklessness” she said. The Director was also accused of locking up a non-academic staff in his office for loitering. These developments according information led to a protest by students of the institute last week. Meanwhile, students are now calling for the Director removal from the Institute. In a swift reaction, Dr. Felix Akpan told The UNION on phone “I took over the Institute in October last year and whoever is telling you that trash is telling you nonsense. Since I took over I have been trying to clean up the mess in that place and this is the first time the students are seeing their results being published.
I am trying to get all the lecturers to publish results. “Diploma programme is supposed to be a two-year programme and we just finished second semester exams last month. Those students who said they did not see one result should to go and get their lecturers to submit the result and publish them.
