My Administration Student-Oriented –Unizik VC

Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State Prof. Joseph Ahaneku has disclosed that the focal point of his administration was the welfare and wellbeing of students of the institution. According to Ahaneku, the plight of students, especially as it concerns accommodation has continued to receive priority attention. He said that school hostels were very important and critical to the university education.

According to the VC , his administration begun by improving on hostel accommodation for students as the university management has processed very significantly the construction of four hostel blocks, including two others built under public-private partnership arrangement. The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that the needs assessment revealed that there would be two hostels in Awka, one hostel at Nnewi campus as well as one hostel at Agulu. Ahaneku who in a press conference recently reeled out some of his achievements in the last one hundred days in office, said that the hostels when put in place would generally accommodate about 1600 students, adding that the strategy would help solve hostel accommodation problems in the university.

He also said that the university management was persuading its benefactors to key into hostel project of the university as part of measures to addressed hostel crisis in the institution. Although, he expressed worries that despite his efforts to effective positive change in the university, there were insinuations in some quarters that he was running a corrupt administration. Such insinuation, according to him was laughable in the sense that he operated a transparent and all-inclusive leadership.

Ahaneku however said that in the last one year of his administration was a period of honeymoon and, it is time to confront challenges facing the institution head-on . In order to ensure efficiency and standardization of service delivery as well as keep track of students’ performance, the Vice Chancellor stated that his administration had upgraded the university’s information, communication and technology department and now gets feedback on the activities of staff and Students. According to him, the university’s senate took a decision that after one month of semester examination, results must be submitted, that emphasises the importance of university ICT in tracking lecturers and their results.

The VC also disclosed that the committee system introduced some years back has yielded positive results in the execution of projects. According to him, the committee has established the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Industry Research Committee which he said organised the maiden exhibition of industrial research work of the university in 2014 as well as organised the first ever Universitywide Research Innovation Exhibition . According to the VC, the essence of technological researches being embarked by products of the university was to go back to the remote reason for which the university was established.
