The incumbent provost of Michael Otedola College of Primary Education Prof. Olu Akeusola with less than three months to end his first tenure has turned around the fortune of the one time neglected college into a highly sought tertiary institution in the country
The Provost, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Noforija Epe, Lagos State, Prof. Olu Akeusola will always maintain a prominent position anytime and anywhere the college is mentioned either in the public and private place. Akeusola who would have been a radio mechanic after daunting early years of academic challenges, but through God’s intervention and personal determination is today making an uncommon transformation at the nation’s college of primary college. MOCPED was established by the Lagos State Government over two decades ago to raise quality teachers for the primary school teachers across the country, took a positive leap at the resumption of Akeusola as the provost of the institution.
Akeusola who took over the leadership of the college in August 2011, on resumption promised to post a positive difference towards the transformations of the nation’s special college, swung into action and today he is leapfrogging the college into an enviable status of most sought college of education in the country. With less than three months to end his first tenure in office, Akeusola has brought his Midas Touch to bear at the college for immense transformation. Both his critics and admires are in a common agreement that he has posted outstanding and incredible performances in the college.
According to the 6th president of America, John Quincy Adams once said that ‘if ones actions inspires others to dream more ,learn more ,do more and become more ,that person is a leader ‘these words aptly captured the personality of Prof. Olu Akeusola as a man whose actions have inspired and changed the psychology of staff and students of the college to dream more and also achieved more. He inspired the work force in the college, and the result is the face lifting of the onetime neglected college to become one of the most sought about institution in the country. The provost actions of inspiring all the stakeholders in the college have lifted the sleepy and obscure college to an enviable position in the country.
He has demonstrated adequate and uncommon capacity by influencing and empowering others to key into purposeful ideas to achieve results and has at same steered and motivated others towards the realization of identified goals in the institution. Akeusola, a warm -hearted and blossoming icon and an uncommon intellectual of limitless innovations has bestroded the college with many innovations and transformations that are beneficial to both students and staff.
His innate academic and administration ardour and adventurous spirit are exemplified by the giant stride in MOCPED, where he is currently superintending a turnaround of the college into a reference point and a citadel of education in Nigeria, eventually into the first college of open and distance learning institution. To underscore the ingenuity of Akeusola, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, (NOUN) Prof. Olugemiro Jegede once described him as an epitome of insatiable proclivity for hardwork and excellent results ,a man full of innovative and concrete ideas and a man with often alternative strategies ,should the first fails. Undoubtedly, Akeusola is a man of uncommon candour, intellect and colour.
According to some staff of the college, he has shown credible and unparallel leadership style which has turned around the fortune of MOCPED and within a short space of time, he brought a gladdening transformations to college. One of the staff who does not want his name on print, said Akeusola magical transformation in the institution endeared him to the immediate past governor of Lagos Mr. Babatunde Fashola, staff and students of the college .He is loved by all because he opened up the college for meaningful development. According to him, Akeusola redefined work ethnic which he predicted on honesty and tenacity of purpose to beneficial of all and he assiduously positioned the institution for greater height, just as the academic standard of college had received a significant boost and at the same time infrastructural development. According to the sources, within his three years and 10 months of his provost- ship in the college, he deployed his dynamic doggedness and penchant for excellence to the great benefits and advantages of MOCPED and he has done well for all to see.
Within few months he assumed office, Fashola visited the college and he was impressed with the level of transformations going on in the college and having seen and believed, he developed listening ears to the provost and the results were greater transformations and achievements. Some of the things he did to leapfrog the college into greater academic height and stable academic calendar include the prioritization of staff and students welfare. He is the first provost of the college to have provided official cars to the principle officers and Deans of schools .Also, he is the first provost of the college to have provided staff with laptops and internet facilities to ensure conducive teaching and learning environment.
According to records, Akeusola is the first and the only provost who presided over the college for over three years without serious crisis, and according to an insider the magic was his effective welfare packages for staff and students as well as his cordial relations with all the stakeholders, including various unions in the college. To leap-jump the college into international standard, he provided courses of instruction leading to award of Diploma, Certificates and others distinctions in primary education.
According to the sources, the provost has given face lift to the college provost’s office and entire college and also in efforts to make the college prominent, he visited traditional rulers in Epe kingdoms and the result was ceding of additional 70 hectare of land to the college. To enable students and staff to unwind after hectic academic period, he resuscitated the college staff club for both staff and students to recreate in atmosphere of friendly environment. He also re-strategizes operation strategy of security in the college and since then, it has remained one of the most peaceful higher institutions in the state.
His other revolutionary landmark achievements in the college include, the constitution of Ad-hoc committee on students results computation, erecting of building for the degree programme, in affiliation with Ekiti State University The establishment of pure water factory in the college, and setting up of the College International Secondary School Akeusola also established mutual and bilateral relationship with many universities oversea, especially in Malaysia. To boast and attract quality students to teaching profession, he established relationship with Teacher’s Registration Council of Nigeria, Abuja to award Diploma in education which is equivalent to full Diploma in education.
He also made arrangement for academic staff of the college to proceed for higher academic studies in both foreign and national universities to pursue their Ph.D programmes. Above all, he has unprecedentedly increased the physical structure in the college within the last 3 years and 10 months and massive constructions are seriously going on in the college As a man schooled in academic activities, he reinvigorated the college convocation ceremony which was near moribund. By his determination to make a difference, he installed a giant generator and today the college enjoys uninterrupted power supply, with functional elibrary with 2000 sitting capacity.
He also replaced all the software for the Bursary automation and today every payment in the college is through is epayment For the college to take its pride in the nation’s educational sphere, he established the college book shop and constructed lecture rooms and laboratories for all school in the college. Unrelentingly, he established leakage with Magedation Investment, England for foreign Aids and to boost the College Information Communication and Technology (ICT) programme. As part of his welfare package he also appointed a qualified medical doctor for the college’s clinic, first of its kind.
