Glamour As Mojekwu Breaks Jinx, Launches First Book At Faculty

Faculty of Food Technology, Yaba College of Technology has broken 27 jinks of none publication by recording its first book launch since existence

It was a moment of celebrations and glamour for the Faculty of Food Technology and Tourism, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) recently when it recorded its first book launch after 27 years of existence. The book which is titled ‘Fundamental of Food and Beverage Production’ written by Mrs. Christy Mojekwu of the department of Hotel Management, Tourism and Hospitality happened to be the first book to have been written and launched by any lecturer at the department and the faculty since inception.

The book launch attracted men and women from all walks of life, among include Head of Department, Hotel Management and Tourism, Elizade University Ilara-Mokin Ondo State, Dr. (Mrs) Adebimpe Okhira , Rector of Yabatech, Dr. (Mrs.) Margret Ladipo represented by the Deputy Rector academics, Mr. Innocent Akhuemonkhan, and other distinguished personalities from various higher institutions across the country. Speaking during the launch, the Dean of the Faculty of Food Technology Mrs. Bola Dada commended Mrs. Mojekwu for taking a lead in launching the first book in the faculty after many years of its existence.

She urged other lecturers at the faculty to emulate Mojekwu and write books for the students and professional in the hotel, management and Tourism, saying that with the new book many people would be spurred to write more books. Speaking during the launch, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Okhira, while commending the author, regretted that Youths of today do not find time to read their books any more. According to her, today students are busy with pinging, face books and other internet related activities and forgetting their books which is core to learning.

“Youths of today don’t have time for reading again, unlike our days when we read novels and others materials but today they waste their time on Information and communication Technology (ICT),pinging, browsing and doing others things that are not relevant to their studies “she said. She said that children of today have been taken over by the modern technology, they hardly write correct English sentences and all they do now is to write according to the how they write text messages, even in their examinations.

According to her, lecturers are doing their best in writing books but those who are supposed to read the books are not ready to read their books any more , stressing that most lecturers force hand out on students because many of the students don’t have time to read their books or visit libraries to read. ‘If students are desirous to read their books, nobody will force them to buy hand out” she added.

The Rector of the college Dr. Ladipo who spoke through the Deputy Rector academics, Mr Akhuemonkhan commended the author for taking a leap in writing the book, saying that college was proud to have her in the institution. According to her, it is the policy of the college to encourage lecturers to write books and the college is proud and happy that this book will add values to the teaching and learning in the college . She also said that the college community was happy that this book is being launched today in the college.

She urged other lecturers to write and produce more books and journals for the good of the institutions, stressing that the hallmark of good academic was writing of books and journals The excited author, who spoke to Journalists, shortly after the launch, said that she was happy for putting up a better book for both students and those who are in the Hotel management and Tourism to learn the rudiment of cooking, hotel management and Tourism.

According to her, she was inspired to write the book, which she started in 2013 as one of her legacy to the industry, saying that she was pleased and happy that she was able to write a good book for generations to come. Mojekwu also said that she was also inspired to write the book due to the needs of the students to have a quality hand book to read, saying that students are the primary motivation for the writing of the book.

According to her, the happening today will encourage her to write more book because the attendance and enthusiasm shown by the people were impressive. She however added, that since the college encourages them to write books as a major criterion for promotion, she was every ready to write more. She assured that hence forth she will be writing more books for the development of the society. “I am not stopping here, more books will follow.

I am happy with the turnout of people in this launching, I am honestly impressed. I am being challenged to write more and I am assuring you, very soon I will write another book” I am happy to have written a book in the field and I give thanks to God Almighty for the strength and courage given to me to write this book” she added.
