Trader Jailed For Defiling A Minor

Stephen Ubimago

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja yesterday sentenced a 27-year-old trader, Chidi Ibiam, to 21-years imprisonment for defiling a six-year-old girl (name withheld). Ibiam, who sells foodstuffs and resides at the Baruwa area of Ipaja, Lagos, was found guilty of a charge of defilement by Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya.

“I have noted before me all the relevant facts of this case,” she said while delivering her judgment. “The defendant is hereby found guilty of the crime of defilement and is sentenced to 21 years in prison.” During trial, the prosecution, led by State Counsel, Mr Adebayo Haroun, had told the court that Ibiam committed the offence on December 15, 2012, and was caught after the victim reported the assault to her mother.

According to the prosecution, the convict was well known to the victim’s family as he was a neighbor and a church member. The six-year-old in her testimony had told the court that the defendant had unlawful carnal knowledge of her on 12 different occasions and at different locations, including a shop and a neighbor’s house. The victim also referred to Ibiam’s genitals as “tom tom” throughout her testimony.

Ogunsanya, who noted this fact in her judgment, admonished parents to start teaching their children the proper names of male and female genitalia. She said, “Parents should teach their children the right names of the genitals and give their wards proper sex education.” The offence is a violation of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
