The Abia State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), arrested 69 persons suspected to be involved in peddling assorted types of banned drugs and narcotics during the third quarter of this year, the State Commander of the Agency, Mr Bamidele Akinbode, has said.

Mr Akinbode said many of the suspects were nabbed while injecting wrapped substances suspected to be cocaine into condoms with one of them swallowing the wrapped substance for possible delivery to their clients without being identified. He was speaking in Aba to journalists on the operations of his command during the period.

The NDLEA commandant said over 900 wraps of assorted substance suspected to be indian hemp, canabis, marijuana and heroin have been seized by operatives in his command while over 250 persons have been arrested and interrogated for the crimes since the beginning of this year.

He said the drug law agency was ready to work with members of the public in checking the menace of drug to the society and appealed to the citizenry in the State to report suspected peddlers and users of banned drugs to the authorities for possible arrest and prosecution.

On the fate of those in custody over the sale and use of banned drugs, Mr Akinbode said efforts were being made to arraign suspects found to be culpable in court as he advised youths not to get involved in the use of drugs that will derail their normal upbringing to become good citizens of the State and country.
