Killing Forces Key Opposition Figures Into Hiding

An opposition politician in Burundi’s capital says he and many others have gone into hiding after the killing of an opposition leader.

Leading opposition figure Agathon Rwasa said weekend that he and other opposition politicians, journalists and civic activists are hiding in Bujumbura, the capital, because they do not feel safe after the Saturday night shooting of opposition leader Zedi Feruzi of the UPD-Zigamibanga party.

One of Feruzi’s bodyguards was also killed in the drive-by shooting.

At least 20 people have died in street protests in Bujumbura that have gone on for four weeks since it was announced President Pierre Nkurunziza would stand for (re-election) in the June 26 elections. At least 100,000 have fled Burundi to neighboring countries fearing political violence ahead of the elections.
